PNG Virtual Remembrance Trail

The PNG Virtual Remembrance Trail offers a digital journey through the history of Australian campaigns in Papua during World War 2. The project brings to life personal stories and pivotal moments, connecting Australians to a significant chapter in our shared past.

Purpose

This program exists to honour the service of veterans by connecting Australians to their stories and the places that shaped them, fostering national memory and understanding.

Challenge

We needed to move beyond conventional websites to create an immersive, narrative-driven experience. The challenge was to transform historical facts and archival material into a compelling digital journey - one that invites visitors to step inside the stories and understand their enduring impact.

Honouring service through story

The virtual remembrance trail connects Australians to the stories of those who served in Papua during World War 2. By weaving individual experiences into a broader narrative, the platform acknowledges veterans’ contributions and fosters a deeper appreciation for their service.

Immersive digital learning journey

The project moves beyond a static website, creating a journey that draws visitors into the events and places that shaped Australia’s wartime history. This approach helps people who cannot visit in person to experience the significance of these sites in a meaningful, accessible way.

Collaboration with experts

We worked closely with historians and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to ensure accuracy and relevance. This partnership grounded the project in evidence and empathy, shaping content that resonates with both families and history enthusiasts.

Purposeful design within constraints

The solution was developed using Drupal on GovCMS, balancing creative direction with technical requirements and budget. Our method ensured the project’s vision was achieved without compromise, showing that careful planning can deliver both impact and reliability.
