Empowering survivors to access redress with dignity
How do you design a safe, inclusive platform for people navigating complex, sensitive redress processes?
National Redress Scheme
The National Redress Scheme website uplifted a vital service for survivors of institutional child abuse, focusing on a trauma-informed, inclusive digital experience.
This project bridged the gap between sensitive subject matter and practical digital support.
Purpose
The Scheme exists to acknowledge and address the harm caused by institutional abuse, creating pathways for survivors to access justice, support, and redress.
Challenge
The core challenge was to redesign the website for genuine inclusivity and accessibility, particularly for First Nations peoples, remote communities, and culturally diverse users - while ensuring a safe, trauma-aware environment that fosters trust and confidence.
We delivered a trauma-informed, accessible website that empowers survivors of institutional child abuse to access redress and support.
Highlights
- Co-design with First Nations peoples and culturally diverse communities shaped a truly inclusive digital experience.
- Trauma-informed design choices, including a quick exit feature and clear support pathways, prioritised user safety and wellbeing.
- Accessible resources - AUSLAN videos, easy read guides, and translations—are now front and centre for every visitor.
Co-design for real inclusion
We partnered with survivors, First Nations peoples, and culturally diverse communities to shape the new National Redress Scheme website. This approach grounded every decision in lived experience, ensuring the platform respected users’ needs and reflected a genuine commitment to inclusivity.
Trauma-informed design
We embedded trauma-informed design principles throughout the site. Survivors can now navigate safely, with clear exit options, accessible support, and content that empowers self-agency. This ensures every visitor feels respected, supported, and in control of their journey.
Secure and transparent foundation
Built on Drupal 10 and GovCMS SaaS, the website meets the highest standards for privacy and reliability. Improved institution search and regular updates give survivors clarity and confidence, while transparent content builds trust in the Scheme’s ongoing commitments.
Accessible resources and support
The site offers highly visible AUSLAN videos, transcripts, easy read guides, and materials in multiple languages. By reducing information burden for first-time visitors and making help easy to find, we uplifted confidence and self-service for all users.
Empowering pathways to redress
Simplified information architecture and plain language content guide users through the application process. Survivors can choose to apply independently or with support, bridging the gap between intent and action, and ensuring everyone can access justice on their own terms.
