Bridging data insights for Australia's infrastructure future
How might we create engaging, domain-specific data hubs that unlock evidence for policy and planning?
Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication, and the Arts
National Freight Data Hub
We partnered with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication, and the Arts to develop the National Freight Data Hub and Regional Data Hub—bespoke digital platforms that uplift how infrastructure data is explored and understood across Australia.
Purpose
The program seeks to bridge intent and impact by making critical infrastructure data accessible and actionable, empowering communities and policymakers to make evidence-based decisions for a stronger, more connected Australia.
Challenge
The department needed to translate a new, organisation-wide data strategy into practical tools. This meant building domain-specific hubs that not only connected to a central data catalogue, but also delivered an engaging, trustworthy experience tailored to diverse stakeholders—from freight operators to regional planners.
We delivered two connected data hubs that uplift access to infrastructure insights for decision-makers and communities.
Highlights
- Integrated GovCMS with a CKAN data catalogue to bridge datasets across multiple government platforms and audiences.
- Enabled interactive data storytelling using PowerBI and ArcGIS StoryMaps, supporting evidence-based policy and research.
- Adapted and reused core features to deliver the Regional Data Hub efficiently, maximising value within a tight budget.
Unified data access for decision-makers
By integrating GovCMS with the organisation-wide CKAN data catalogue, we created a central point for infrastructure data. This uplifted access for policy officers, researchers, and commercial partners, making evidence-based decisions more practical and immediate.
Reusable design, lower costs
We built both hubs on a component-based design system, allowing us to reuse code and visual elements. This approach reduced development time and budget, while maintaining a consistent and modern user experience across platforms.
Recognition for public-good innovation
The National Freight Data Hub’s nomination for the 2023 GovCMS Mega Meetup ‘We Love Data’ Award reflects its success in making valuable data accessible for public benefit. This recognition underscores the project’s contribution to transparent, evidence-driven policy.
Interactive tools for deeper insight
The hubs feature layouts for data storytelling, as well as embedded PowerBI and ArcGIS StoryMaps visualisations. These tools help users explore trends, test assumptions, and communicate findings with clarity—bridging the gap between raw data and real-world impact.
Serving diverse Australian communities
The National Freight Data Hub and Regional Data Hub cater to a wide range of stakeholders—from freight operators to regional planners. By connecting data to local and national priorities, the hubs support more inclusive, informed infrastructure planning.
