Elevating how Australians experience and understand the Great Barrier Reef
How do you honour cultural heritage in a unified online experience for the world's most significant marine park?
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA)
We partnered with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to uplift their digital presence across three distinct platforms, each designed to bridge cultural understanding, knowledge sharing, and educational outreach for diverse audiences.
Purpose
To foster deeper stewardship of the Great Barrier Reef by connecting people with its cultural, ecological, and scientific significance, empowering communities to protect this vital ecosystem for future generations.
Challenge
The project demanded a careful balance between modern digital design and cultural sensitivity, ensuring First Nations voices and diverse stakeholder needs were embedded throughout. We needed to create accessible, engaging websites that reflect the Reef’s living heritage and support meaningful public engagement.
We delivered a trio of accessible, culturally sensitive websites that uplift the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s mission.
Highlights
- Integrated First Nations perspectives at every stage, co-creating with traditional owners to ensure cultural respect and authenticity.
- Crafted a distinctive visual identity that won the GovCMS Design Award for most visually engaging website.
- Embedded rich multimedia and educational content, making the Reef’s diversity vivid and accessible for all audiences.
Culturally attuned digital platforms
We worked closely with First Nations communities and traditional owners to ensure each website reflected the cultural heritage and significance of the Great Barrier Reef. Their insights shaped content, visuals, and structure - resulting in accessible, respectful platforms that uplift diverse voices and perspectives.
User-centred design for engagement
Our approach began with in-depth user research, mapping needs and preferences across stakeholder groups. This evidence-based pathway enabled us to refine features and layouts, ensuring the websites are intuitive and engaging for all, including educators, students, and Reef stewards.
Award-winning visual transformation
We developed a cohesive visual identity using mood boards, icons, and style guides. This meticulous process elevated the user experience and was recognised with the GovCMS Design Award, affirming our commitment to excellence in public-good digital design.
Collaborative pathways to impact
By fostering transparent, iterative engagement with GBRMPA and its partners, we built trust and alignment. Our method bridged bold intent with practical outcomes - delivering not just modern websites, but tools that help communicate, educate, and protect the Reef for future generations.
